Texas Chief Justice Shows Support for Expanding Representation
The first two sentences of Texas Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson's article in the Houston Chronicle are very supportive of the expansion of the right to counsel, as he writes, "Our legal system is best served when each litigant who comes to court is represented by a lawyer. We often fall short of this ideal." While he goes on to discuss current efforts in Texas to improve pro se assistance (including an upcoming symposium on that topic), he concludes by saying, "We will continue aspiring toward the ideal that all litigants should be represented by competent counsel."
